A moral standard that any culture can recognise
The standard rests on values that apply regardless of time, place, ethnicity, religion or belief, and it separates the bottom line every person must keep from the higher ideals people may freely pursue.
Universal values
Moral right and wrong is judged not by success, law, force, custom or majority, but by whether an act violates humanity's universal values: the primacy of basic human rights, equal opportunity, rewarding good and punishing evil, integrity, and fairness, justice and openness.
The bottom line: do no evil
Never deliberately harm another's legitimate rights; never buy one person's gain with another's loss; in any conflict, do your utmost to protect the innocent and third parties, and compensate the harm you cause.
Noble conduct is voluntary
Beyond the bottom line lies the pursuit of truth, goodness and beauty. No one may be compelled to be noble, but those who freely act nobly deserve recognition and reward.
Nine chapters, one clear line
The ICE8000 Moral Conscience Standard was first drafted in 2011 and has been refined since. It defines terms, sets the bottom line, attributes responsibility and reward, and lays down fair procedures for assessment and persuasion.
